Over the weekend, I added another course under my belt, and as such, improving my ability to offer more complete, more in-depth and quality assessments and treatments to everyone that walks through my door. Every time I go to a course, I come back with a fresh look on things. I have a broader approach.
Growth happens within us, any time we let it happen.
Friday, the fabulous Lexi Dewar and I braved the roads to Toronto to attend the Bellies Inc. Core Confidence Specialist Certification Course. We considered heading back to the safety of home a few times… but neither she or I can say we regret continuing our trip, even after we passed the third car in the ditch!
Going into this, we both knew that pregnant moms, new moms and not so new moms are desperate to recapture their “pre-baby” body back. Mainstream media and the competitive nature of new moms certainly puts a lot of pressure on them.
As specialists of the human body and human movement, we also both knew the effects that pregnancy can have on not just the look of your body, but its ability to function. So many moms are working SO hard to get back to it, that they sweat, they push, they lift, jump and run their way right into more damage.
Lots of trainers out there are more than willing to help new moms “lose the baby weight”. I’m not pointing fingers. Trainers have trained in fitness but the realm of the pregnant and post-partum mom is often out of their scope.
Home workouts do not give you all the information you need to make informed choices about continuing with the workout. Does anyone every really read those warnings anyways?
Finally care providers are also checking you post partum to make sure everything is “healed” and give you the green light to resume exercise. Unfortunately, these overwhelmed new moms take this as a green light to just resume previous activities and unfortunately NOTHING could be further from the truth!
There are so many misconceptions out there, its no wonder the information and directives you can get can be so misleading.
What women need to know – is that the mere weight of pregnancy can create changes in your body and your posture that can create compensation strategies. These compensation strategies can impair the proper functioning of your core muscles. Your core muscles are the foundation of your entire body! If your core isn’t supporting you, other muscles are picking up the slack, and may make it seem that you are functioning well, but in time, this can catch up to you. Sunday, Lexi and I came back with such a sense of excitement and our heads spinning with plans. Our plans include lots of new programming for you ladies! From preparing you to get through your pregnancy in the best shape (and by shape – I mean your body working optimally for you), and being more informed about what’s going on; to restoring you through the immediate post-partum period to get you on the safest road to recovery; to rebuilding your core foundation, and your strength and into fitness – the right way. Hi! I’m Lexi, and for the past decade, I have been working in the field of fitness and weight management as an Exercise Specialist, Physiologist, and Kinesiologist. I have worked with all populations from elite athletes, children, geriatrics, bariatrics and everything in between. While working closely with families and children, I developed a holistic approach to wellness and resonate deeply with the mind body connection. I enjoy helping people find activities that they love to do. Fitness is for everyone and that’s a fact. We just need to find the activity that feels good for our body and for our heart. I am a mom, and after my second child, I discovered I had Diastasis Recti. My abdominal muscles moved out of alignment during pregnancy and the connective tissue temporarily lost some ability to create tension (aka Mummy Tummy). Boy, was I glad to find Celeste! After following her recommendations, I now have a functioning core that when activated can tension, and I no longer have a “pouchy tummy”, but there is still much work to be done. This is why I have refocused my skills as a Kinesiologist to help pre- and post-partum moms, and I can’t wait to get started.

I recently completed my Bellies Inc. Core Confidence Specialist Course. What is that you might ask? On one hand, it’s simply a certification that allows me to help my patients re-train their cores, but on the other hand, there is nothing simple about it. To train someone on how to do a squat is one thing, but to re-train someone to do a squat with proper core activation is a whole new level of tricky. Using visualization techniques and cues, a Core Confidence Specialist can help a new mom transform her pouchy tummy into a strong functional core that properly supports the rest of her body while taking on the day. Lifting babies, car seats, toddlers, feeding, doing laundry, changing diapers, and hauling the stroller in and out of the car without a functioning core can really take a toll on a woman. Back pain, pouchy stomachs, poor posture, heaviness down below, pain during sex and leaking urine are all by-products of a dysfunctional core, but here’s the good news; you don’t have to have a dysfunctional core! No, you don’t! There is help! You don’t have to wait for your health care provider to inform you that your healing has gone well after birth to see a pelvic floor Physio, go now! It’s never too soon. I just so happen to have taken this Core Confidence course with a wonderful Pelvic Floor Physio from in town (Ahem, Celeste Bouffard) and her philosophy aligns perfectly with the idea that prevention and early treatment can help minimize core dysfunction. Please, please, please love your core. She once said to me that you can build a beautiful home (body) with all the aesthetics, but without a proper foundation (core) your beautiful home won’t last long before it starts to fall apart or get leaks, sagging, and crooked beams. It’s just a matter of time. I am so excited to be apart of this community of fitness professionals across Canada. I myself was introduced to this ideology after my second baby, and now I shout it from the rooftops. Come chat with me…I’ll fill you in on all the details.
